Starting Our Edible Garden
We have recently moved into our new home, there are already some old raised garden beds available, and we have not had time to plan out how and where we are going to plant Fruit and Vegetables yet, however, we know we like Strawberries, Peppers, Jalapenos, so we decided to start planting those now, see how they turn out
We repaired the irrigation that was there, and hooked it up to our Rachio Smart Sprinkler, these currently have spray heads and misters, i’m not a fan of those, at some point will switch them out for drip irrigation with multiple lines
We have had great success in the past growing vegetables at our previous house, however, we were limited on space due to the hill that we were on, and used Earthboxes, we’ll still get those setup as watering is a breeze with them, and will have them setup with their Automatic Watering System, these are a great choice if you have limited space and don’t want to spend a lot of time watering, unsure, if you are under/over watering
Back to our new/old raised garden beds, after digging some shallow holes for the fruit and vegetables, we added some fertilizer to the bottom of the hole, teased out the roots of the plants, adding the plants to the hole and secured them with more dirt, after a few rows were completed, we added water to give the plants a good soak, set our irrigation to run 3 times a week, we will adjust as needed over the next few weeks
As a father, I enjoy the time this takes, and introducing my children to being a bit more self sufficient, and being able to spend valuable time together, my girls love to plant flowers and edible plants, our fruit and vegetables always taste better after we have grown in ourselves
We’ll keep posting updates when we make changes and how things are going
